Biography of Stephan Lammel

Stephan Lammel, Dr. rer. nat. is a scientist researching the structure of nature at smallest distances. To resolve objects at scales of a few atto meter (10**-18 meter) large energy is required, thus the association of elementary particle physics with high energy physics. Dr. Lammel performs his basic research at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

His current research focuses on physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics.

Born in 1963 Stephan Lammel grew up in Mönchengladbach, Federal Republic of Germany. His father is an architect.

In elementary school Stephan was most interested in mathematics and arts. His parents selected the Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium as high school for him. After compulsory military service, Stephan Lammel enrolled at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule, RWTH, in Aachen to study physics. He finished the undergraduate program in 1985 and in 1987 joined the UA1 Collaboration at CERN, the Centre Européan de Recherches Nucléaires, in Geneva. There he worked on beauty quark identification, the fast muon trigger of the experiment, data processing, event selection, and searched for the, at that time, undiscovered top quark. Dr. Lammel received his Ph.D. from the University of Aachen, RWTH, in 1990.

With the experiment at the CERN SuperProton Synchrotron complete, Stephan Lammel took a position with the University of California Los Angeles, UCLA, to continue his work on heavy flavour physics. Dr. Lammel received a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung in 1991 and joined the CDF Collaboration at Fermilab. He worked on the muon simulation software, data processing, data handling, central compute systems, and started the search for supersymmetry in the experiment. Stephan Lammel has led the physics group of the experiment that coordinates searches for new particles and phenomena multiple times, from 1994 to 1996 and again in 2003.

Stephan Lammel worked on the optimization of the CMS hadron calorimeter, the low level trigger simulation inside the LPC and the BTeV level one trigger system. He is currently leading the batch/Grid group of the running experiments department of CD.

Stephan Lammel is a staff scientist of Fermilab. He is a member of the CDF and CMS Collaborations. Dr. Lammel has organized various sessions on supersymmetry and computing at conferences and workshops and has lectured at international schools and universities.
